How to make QSO HF (SSB)

For HF SSB QSO it is best to have no squelch on radio so that it is easy to monitor HF band for any transmission.

Follow the steps to have a good QSO:

  • Select proper band frequency and SSB setting (LSB/USB) as per your radio Licence.
  • Wait few seconds to hear any on going QSO’s. if nothing heard key in the PTT and say the following in slow and clear voice “is this frequency is in use?” to make sure the frequency is not being used by other ham radio operators.
  • If no response received then say following in slow and clear voice “CQ CQ CQ (your callsign) calling CQ on (Band/Frequency) for any calls”, if seeking a DX QSO switch “CQ CQ CQ” with “CQ DX CQ DX CQ DX”. Wait few second for response form other HAM radio operators. Repeat the call if necessary.
  • On establishing QSO you will exchange the following; Callsigns, Names, Location (QTH), Equipment in use, Antenna type, transmit power. RST signal report, any other conversation which doesn’t violate your licencing conditions.
  • Now you can say your goodbye “73’s” and log your QSO in Logbook if you want (it is recommended to log all your QSO’s).

Information provided above is my personal view/experience. Follow your Country’s Licence practices.
